What Is It

Thermage FLX is a monopolar radiofrequency treatment that heats the deep dermis and fibrous septae at 6.78 MHz, with cryogen cooling of the surface, to prompt collagen remodelling. In Singapore it is used for mild to moderate laxity of the face, eyelids, neck and body. It does not add volume, reduce fat or remove excess skin.

Also called: monopolar radiofrequency tightening, 热玛吉, サーマクール

Key takeaways
  • Thermage FLX is a monopolar radiofrequency treatment with cryogen surface cooling that heats the deep dermis to prompt collagen remodelling.
  • It is used for mild to moderate laxity of the face, eyelids, neck and body.
  • Suitability depends on degree of laxity, implanted devices, skin condition and goals, decided after examination.
  • It does not add volume, reduce fat or remove excess skin; those concerns need a different approach.
  • Dr Sin Yong, an aesthetic physician, performs it personally using a single-use tip.

Deep Dermal Heating via Monopolar Radiofrequency

Thermage FLX is a non-invasive monopolar radiofrequency device that delivers controlled thermal energy deep into the dermis and subdermal layers. The heat is directed at collagen contraction and stimulates new collagen production over the following months, acting on skin tightness and texture.

Thermage treats the skin with a single device tip, covering large areas. The FLX (Flex) generation introduced vibration and cooling for comfort, along with a treatment accelerator and AccuREP energy tuning. It is FDA-cleared for non-invasive treatment of the face, eyes and body.

Thermage works through a single thermal mechanism — deep dermal heating. While effective for mild to moderate skin laxity, it does not address facial volume loss, excess fat distribution, or the other dimensions of facial ageing that other protocols are directed at.

How Thermage FLX Works

Monopolar RF Energy

Deep Dermal Heating

Thermage delivers monopolar radiofrequency energy that penetrates into the deep dermis and subcutaneous layer. The electrical current generates heat as it passes through tissue, reaching temperatures that cause collagen fibres to contract and new collagen formation to be triggered.

Collagen Remodelling

Progressive Skin Tightening

The thermal injury stimulates fibroblast activity and new collagen synthesis over the months following treatment. This gradual remodelling process is what the skin tightening and lifting action depends on — the response builds progressively after treatment rather than appearing at once.

Comfort System

Vibration & Surface Cooling

The Thermage FLX handpiece incorporates vibration sensation and surface cooling delivered before, during and after each pulse. This minimises discomfort while allowing effective deep heating. Most patients tolerate treatment well without the need for local anaesthesia.

Treatment Zones

Addressable Areas

01
Face & Jawline

The most commonly treated area. Thermage addresses mild to moderate skin laxity across the cheeks, jowls and jawline. The Face Tip covers the full face, delivering hundreds of pulses across the treatment zone for uniform coverage.

02
Eyes & Periorbital Area

The dedicated Eye Tip (approved for use around the eyes) addresses hooded upper lids and lower eyelid laxity. The Eye Tip carries a specific ophthalmic clearance, making it an option for periorbital tightening.

03
Neck & Décolletage

Thermage can treat platysmal laxity in the neck and skin quality in the décolletage. Where neck laxity involves the deeper planes or the cervicomental angle, Time Freeze Laser LCLR® or VF Lift work through different mechanisms directed at those planes.

04
Body — Abdomen, Arms & Thighs

Thermage Body is used for loose skin on the abdomen (post-pregnancy or post-weight loss), inner arms and thighs. Where fat rather than skin laxity is the concern, 4K Body Lift or Time Freeze Laser LCLR® body protocols work through different mechanisms directed at fat.

Understanding Thermage Limitations

Thermage works via a single mechanism — monopolar RF heat — to stimulate collagen in the dermis. It does not address fat distribution, volume loss, skin quality beyond tightening, or the multi-dimensional facial changes that occur with ageing. Where the assessment finds change in the deeper planes, fat distribution or volume, Dr Sin Yong may recommend VF Lift or Time Freeze Laser LCLR® — protocols that work through different mechanisms, on different tissue targets and timelines, within one plan.

Dr Sin Yong’s Recommendation

When a Different Mechanism Is Needed

Thermage is a well-established treatment directed at the skin envelope. Where the assessment finds change in other tissue layers, Dr Sin Yong may plan one of his protocols alongside — or in place of — Thermage, because they work through different mechanisms on different dimensions of facial ageing.

Laser Mechanism
Dr Sin Yong’s Proprietary Protocol

Time Freeze Laser LCLR®

Where Thermage uses a single RF heat mechanism for skin tightening, Time Freeze Laser LCLR® combines dual-wavelength laser energy — calibrated zone-by-zone in real time — to address lifting, lipo-modelling and skin integrity improvement simultaneously. It is directed at the same laxity concerns through a different mechanism — laser rather than radiofrequency — and adds an LCLR lipo-modelling action, which is a separate mechanism from dermal heating.

  • Full face and neck within one protocol
  • LCLR lipo-modelling — directed at point-zone fat
  • Skin integrity — acts across the treated zone
  • Dual-wavelength laser — a different mechanism from monopolar RF heating
  • Addresses droopy eyelids, jowls, neck and body zones

VF Lift — Vertical Facelift

The VF Lift is Dr Sin Yong’s customised non-surgical facelift protocol on Volnewmer monopolar radiofrequency, applied along vertical vectors and calibrated per zone. Where Thermage delivers uniform dermal heating, the VF Lift is directed at three distinct targets: laxity and jowling, excess facial puffiness, and hollow cheeks through adipose stem cell and collagen stimulation — a different set of mechanisms from dermal heating alone.

  • Lift — laxity, jowling and midface descent
  • Reduce — excess puffiness and facial fat
  • Restore — hollow cheeks and under-eye volume naturally
  • Presented at CLASSYS APAC 2026 International Symposium
  • Invited to share clinical expertise internationally

Thermage remains a strong clinical option and is offered at the clinic. Dr Sin Yong will recommend the most appropriate protocol — or combination — at your consultation based on your specific anatomy, degree of laxity and goals.

Thermage Singapore price: what decides the cost

Fees for Thermage are not published on this site, but what decides the cost can be set out. The largest factor is the treatment tip and the number of pulses the plan uses: Thermage FLX tips are single-use, and the face, eye and body tips differ in size and in the pulses they carry, so a full face, an eyelid treatment and a body area are different undertakings.

The second factor is the area, and how many areas are combined in one visit, for example face and eyes, or face and neck. The third is what the assessment finds: where laxity sits alongside fat or volume change, a plan may combine Thermage with another protocol, or point to a different one, which changes the cost. Fourth is whether a review or maintenance treatment is anticipated, since collagen remodelling continues for months and any repeat is planned at review rather than on a fixed schedule. When comparing quotes, it helps to confirm that the device is Thermage FLX and which tip and pulse count are included, because radiofrequency tightening covers many different devices. The fee is set out clearly at consultation, after Dr Sin Yong has assessed you.

Thermage for the eyes: what the Eye Tip treats

Thermage eye treatment uses a dedicated Eye Tip, smaller than the face tip, that is cleared for use on the upper and lower eyelids and the skin around the eyes. It heats the thin periorbital skin to prompt collagen remodelling, and is directed at mild hooding of the upper lid, crepey lower-lid skin and fine lines around the eyes.

Because the eyelids sit directly over the eye, the manufacturer's protocol uses protective eye shields, placed after anaesthetic eye drops, and energy is set for thin skin. Redness and mild swelling of the lids afterwards are common and settle. What the Eye Tip does not do matters as much. It does not remove herniated fat behind an eye bag, fill a tear trough hollow, or correct a drooping lid caused by a weak lifting muscle (ptosis), and marked excess upper-lid skin is more predictably addressed by eyelid surgery, for which patients are referred to a plastic surgery or oculoplastic specialist. Hooding caused by a descended brow is a brow question rather than an eyelid one. Assessment separates these before the Eye Tip is considered.

Who should not have Thermage?

Thermage FLX is not used in anyone with a cardiac pacemaker, implantable defibrillator or other implanted electronic device, because monopolar radiofrequency passes an electrical current through the body to a return pad. It is postponed during pregnancy, where its safety has not been established, and over skin that is infected, broken or inflamed, including an active cold sore or a flare of eczema in the treatment area.

Other points change the plan rather than rule treatment out: metal implants or plates near the area, recent filler or threads where the tip will pass, a skin condition that flares with heat, slow wound healing, and reduced sensation in the area, since energy is chosen partly from what you feel during each pulse. For the Eye Tip, contact lenses are removed and the eye is shielded. A face whose main problem is lost volume, heavy fat or marked loose skin is better served by a different approach, as set out above. Suitability is decided at consultation, after Dr Sin Yong has taken a medical history and examined the area.

Is Thermage safe? The risks to know

No energy treatment is free of risk, and Thermage FLX is no exception. The common effects are redness, warmth, mild swelling and tenderness, which usually settle within hours to days; the eyelids can stay puffy for longer after Eye Tip treatment. Less often there may be small raised welts, bruising, or temporary numbness or altered sensation.

The rare risks are a superficial burn or blister, crusting, and, where too much heat reaches one spot, a dip in the contour from injury to the fat beneath the skin. Technique has changed because of this: a 2007 survey of 5,700 facial treatments compared the original high-energy, single-pass method with lower-energy multiple passes guided by the patient's report of heat, and the panel recommended energy selection based on that feedback. Risk is reduced by a medical assessment beforehand, a genuine single-use Thermage FLX tip, cryogen cooling, energy chosen with your feedback during each pass, and clear aftercare. Any blistering, lasting redness or change in contour is reviewed by Dr Sin Yong.

What recovery looks like after Thermage FLX

The sequence below describes phases, not a timetable: how quickly each passes depends on the settings used, the area and the person, and is discussed at consultation.

  1. Immediately afterRedness, warmth and mild swelling are expected; the eyelids can look puffy after Eye Tip treatment. Some tightening may be felt straight away.
  2. The first eveningTenderness is usual and ordinary activity continues; small raised welts or a bruise are less common and settle.
  3. The following daysRedness and swelling ease on their own; lid puffiness can linger a little longer. Temporary numbness or altered sensation is uncommon.
  4. As the skin settlesThe main response depends on new collagen forming over the following months, so changes build gradually rather than appearing at once.
  5. Follow-upAny blistering, lasting redness or change in contour is reviewed by Dr Sin Yong, and review is timed with the collagen response in mind.

Who it suits, who should wait, who is referred on

Tends to suit

  • Mild to moderate laxity of the cheeks, jowls and jawline
  • Hooded upper lids or lower-lid laxity suited to the Eye Tip
  • Loose skin on the abdomen, arms or thighs after pregnancy or weight change
  • A preference for a non-invasive approach with no incisions

Better to wait

  • Pregnancy
  • Infected, broken or inflamed skin, including an active cold sore or an eczema flare
  • A goal that needs a surgical lift or added volume

Referred on

  • Heavy skin excess → plastic surgery specialist assessment
  • Eyelid droop from the muscle, or large lid excess → oculoplastic specialist assessment
Who should not have this treatment
  • Cardiac pacemaker, implantable defibrillator or other implanted electronic device
  • Pregnancy
  • Infected, broken or inflamed skin in the treatment area
  • Metal implants or plates near the area (the plan changes)
  • A skin condition that flares with heat, or slow wound healing
  • Reduced sensation in the area, or recent filler or threads where the tip will pass

People whose main concern is lost volume, heavy fat or marked loose skin tend to respond poorly, because deep dermal heating is the wrong tool for those problems.

Before you book

  • Tell the doctor about any pacemaker, defibrillator or other implanted device, and any metal implants
  • Declare pregnancy, breastfeeding or plans to conceive
  • Mention recent filler, threads or other energy treatments in the area
  • Avoid sun exposure and tanning, and pause skincare actives if the skin is irritated
  • Bring photos from earlier years and a list of previous facial or body treatments

Myths we hear in clinic

“Thermage FLX is a facelift without surgery.”

It heats the skin envelope to prompt collagen remodelling; it does not reposition deeper tissue, add volume or remove excess skin.

“A higher energy setting always works better.”

Technique has moved towards lower energy in multiple passes guided by your report of heat, and energy is selected that way at the clinic.

Thermage FLX: what did the new generation change?

Thermage FLX is the fourth-generation platform from Solta Medical, and what changed is how energy is delivered and tuned, not what the energy is. It is still monopolar radiofrequency at 6.78 MHz, still heating the deep dermis and fibrous septae, and still protected at the surface by cryogen cooling before, during and after each pulse. The FLX generation introduced vibration and surface cooling at the handpiece for comfort, a treatment accelerator, and AccuREP energy tuning. AccuREP adjusts energy in real time without imaging, so the energy is guided by your report of heat during each pass.

Two things have not changed. The target remains the skin envelope, meaning dermal collagen and the septae beneath it, rather than the SMAS, which is the plane reached by focused ultrasound. And Thermage still does not add volume, reduce fat or remove excess skin. Technique has also moved on. A 2007 survey of facial treatments compared the original high-energy single pass with lower-energy multiple passes guided by the patient's report of heat, and the panel recommended choosing energy from that feedback, which is how energy is selected at the clinic. Treatment uses a single-use tip, and it is worth confirming that a genuine FLX tip is used when comparing clinics.

Thermage vs Volnewmer vs HIFU: how do they differ?

Thermage and Volnewmer are both monopolar radiofrequency at 6.78 MHz, which heats a volume of tissue. HIFU is focused ultrasound, which heats discrete points at set depths, including the SMAS. Dr Sin Yong uses all three categories: Thermage FLX, Volnewmer as the platform behind VF Lift – Vertical Facelift, and the Ultraformer MPT for HIFU. They are not rivals for the same job, so which suits a face depends on whether the examination finds laxity in the deeper support layer, in the skin itself, or a volume deficit that heating cannot refill. The article on Thermage, HIFU and Volnewmer sets out the comparison at greater length.

Frequently Asked Questions — Thermage Singapore

The number of sessions is planned individually and depends on the degree of laxity and your treatment goals, with the response developing progressively as new collagen forms. Any maintenance interval is set at review as facial ageing continues.
Thermage FLX delivers monopolar radiofrequency energy with a vibration and cooling mechanism to improve comfort during treatment. Most patients describe a sensation of deep heat during each pulse; some find this tolerable without anaesthesia, while others prefer topical numbing cream applied beforehand. Discomfort varies by individual sensitivity and treatment area.
Thermage uses monopolar radiofrequency to heat the deep dermis and stimulate collagen remodelling — a single thermal mechanism directed at the skin envelope. VF Lift – Vertical Facelift also uses monopolar radiofrequency (Volnewmer), applied along vertical vectors and calibrated per zone, and is directed at laxity, puffiness and hollowing — a different treatment design reaching different tissue planes. Time Freeze Laser LCLR® uses dual-wavelength laser energy directed at lifting, lipo-modelling and skin integrity. These are different mechanisms working on different tissue targets and timelines; which is appropriate for a given face is decided at consultation.
Longevity varies with age, skin condition and lifestyle, and any maintenance interval is set at review. Thermage does not halt the ongoing ageing process — volume loss, skin quality changes and gravitational descent continue regardless of treatment, which is why it is sometimes planned alongside protocols that act on other tissue layers.
Thermage FLX can be used on the face (including eyelids with the dedicated Eye Tip), neck, décolletage, abdomen, arms, thighs and buttocks. The face and neck are the most common treatment areas, and the Eye Tip carries a specific ophthalmic clearance for the periorbital area. Where fat rather than skin laxity is the concern, 4K Body Lift or Time Freeze Laser LCLR® body protocols work through different mechanisms directed at fat.
Some tightening may be felt soon after treatment, from the immediate contraction of collagen, but the main response depends on new collagen forming over the following months, and review is timed with that in mind. How much change follows varies with age, skin quality and the degree of laxity, and no particular result is promised beforehand.
Radiofrequency heats tissue through electrical resistance rather than through absorption by melanin, so skin colour is less of a factor than with many lasers, and Fitzpatrick III to V skin, common in Singapore, is routinely assessed for it. Suitability depends more on the degree of laxity, facial fat and volume, pregnancy, an implanted electronic device such as a pacemaker, and medical history.
Anyone with a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device should not have Thermage FLX, and treatment is postponed during pregnancy or while the skin in the area is infected or inflamed. It is also not the right tool where the main issue is lost volume, heavy fat or marked loose skin, which call for a different approach or a surgical opinion. Suitability is confirmed at consultation.
Fees are not published. They depend on the treatment tip, because face, eye and body tips are single-use and differ, on the areas treated in one visit and on whether the plan combines another protocol. A written quote is given at consultation, after Dr Sin Yong has examined you, and the consultation also decides whether treatment is advised.
It can be worthwhile for mild to moderate laxity of the face, eyelids, neck or body in someone who prefers a non-invasive approach and accepts that change builds gradually. It is not worthwhile where the main concern is lost volume, heavy fat or marked loose skin, which need a different approach or referral.
No duration can be promised. Collagen remodelling continues after treatment, and how long any change lasts depends on your skin, the area, the plan used and ongoing ageing, including sun exposure and weight change. Review timing and any repeat treatment are set at consultation and follow-up rather than to a fixed schedule.
It works through one mechanism, deep dermal heating, so it does not add volume, reduce fat or remove excess skin. Response is gradual and varies. You feel deep heat during treatment, and redness, swelling or temporary numbness can follow. Rarely, a burn, blister or contour dip occurs. It cannot be used with a pacemaker.

Thermage delivers radiofrequency skin tightening in Singapore, smoothing and firming skin across the face and body. As a monopolar radiofrequency skin tightening treatment, it complements other non-surgical lifting protocols.

What Determines Your Fee

The area being treated

A focused zone and a full-face plan are different undertakings, and the fee reflects the extent of what is actually treated.

What the assessment finds

The plan follows the examination — what is loose, what has descended, and what the skin itself needs determine the approach.

Single or combined modalities

Some plans use one technology; others combine modalities at different depths, staged over time.

Fees are not published on this site; they are set out at consultation. Your fee is set out clearly at consultation, after Dr Sin Yong has assessed you — before anything is decided.
